Move Closer!

An instrumental came on the cable music channel I was listening to: Move Closer.

My pondering button turned on. In our trials and heartaches, do we move closer to God…or farther away?

It’s kinda like comparing it to being in church. Most of the time, we sit on the front row with the Lord. When trials and heartaches come, we withdraw and move back several rows, while He remains on the front row. Then, frustration sets in and we move back several more rows and back some more, until finally, we’re all the way in the back row and He’s still up front.

Though, in essence, we cannot move away from Him because He lives within us, but we tend to stack up our problems like cords of wood, building a wall in our heart. With Him on one side. Us on the other.

Separation is the result. And darkness comes. Sometimes creeping in like a rising tide; sometimes rolling in like a thunderhead.

Heartache draws a veil of loneliness, sorrow, desperation, hopelessness, or whatever across our heart, and we find ourselves in a crushing valley of darkness.

However, bordering that valley looms our Rock of Redemption, our Stone of Salvation, our Cliff of Companionship.

David said God “made darkness His secret place.” (Ps. 18:11a NKJV) When we go deep into His secret place, we find Him waiting for us.

And in our aloneness with Him, we will see His Light, hear His voice, and feel His nearness.

And what do you do in those times? Move closer up that mount, I hope.

If you do, you move into a closer fellowship with the Lord, and you will find quiet rest for your soul at the Rock’s summit.

In that intimate closeness your hurting soul yearns, the Lord comes and whispers His healing words of tenderness to your heart, spreads His comfort as a blanket over our soul, and eases the pain of living.

Therefore…

“Calm down…
Let go of your concerns…
Stop your striving and recognize that I am God!”
(Ps. 46:10a CEV, GW, NET)

David, the one according to God’s own heart, said, “But as for me, I get as close to him as I can! I have chosen him, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful ways he rescues me.” (Ps. 73:28 TLB)

Therefore, move closer to God, and He will move closer to you.

That’s what the mount of intimacy is for, to draw near. To sit in the presence of the Creator of the universe. To speak to Him and have Him speak to you. To be comforted. To be taught. To be disciplined. To be loved. To praise Him and rejoice in His goodness and grace.

So in those dark times…move closer!
